AI Handwritten Text Recognition Tool
3,000 = The number of individual pages in 1 batch file successfully processed using Genealogy Assistant’s new open-source AI interface.
During today’s Mondays with Myrt, we learn how panelist Dan Maloney created an AI interface that assisted a local organization to process literally thousands of unindexed documents to create an every-word searchable collection of digitally transcribed text pages! Talk about increased accessibility!

You’ll find
editable prompt & fallback prompt
works with multiple AI models
provides a PDF transcription with the original image
footer provides AI model used and date of processing
Windows, Mac, Linux, and an open-source Python version that’s fully customizable.
What if?
What if you, as an individual researcher:
Scanned 3k of your paper documents using a fast book scanner like Czur that auto corrects for slightly crooked placement. (3 hour)
Dragged and dropped those 3,000 digital images into Genealogy Assistant’s Handwritten Text Recognition Tool. (10 seconds)
Selected your choice of main-stream AI models.
Click START
Walk away.
The Result
When you return, the batch of handwritten digital images is processed, a new folder pops up with the handwritten text now transcribed word for word in typed text, with the original document image attached
In a matter of seconds, the first pages are fully processed. 3k pages will take a bit longer.
Those 3k documents that have been hiding in your filing cabinet will now be fully searchable‼️
Full-text Search comes to your personal computer!
It’s hard not to start using hyperbolic terms like WOW. AMAZING. and INCREDIBLE.

DearMYRTLE,
Your (not so) retired friend in genealogy.
Just received notice from Dan that the tool has been updated as follows:
“ I just updated the applicationy today, along with PDF's it can now export files as individual plain text (txt) files or export the batch of images as a single csv file.”

I love technology and you’ve got me hooked before I start. I’m definitely going to look into this. Thanks.
