Ancestry Offers Document Transcription Service
Upload the digital image of handwritten documents & let the AI magic begin.
Not to be outdone with FamilySearch’s Full Text Search, Ancestry.com is taking it a step further.
Now Ancestry World Explorer and World Deluxe members may upload a .JPG or .PNG document image via computer or mobile app to employ the same high-accuracy technology the company pioneered for reliable transcriptions of the1950 US census and the 1921 England and Wales census.
“It even picks up on corrections that were made by crossing things out or inserting words.” reports Gary Mangum, Ancestry’s Principal Manager.
Current limitations exclude .PDF image uploads and multiple page documents.

Ol’ Myrt here thinks this is a win-win for researchers and Ancestry’s growing membership base. While it’s possible to do such transcriptions with a variety of AI (Artificial Intelligence) services, using the technology at a familiar genealogy website offers researchers security and tech support. Many family histories cut their genealogical teeth at Ancestry and it’s nice to “get by with a little help from our friend.”
Happy family tree climbing!
